Who is the Dean of Admissions?

What are the entrance/admission requirements?
|
Numerous criteria, including grade point average, science grade point, advanced science courses, letters of recommendation and involvement in school and extracurricular activities, especially healthcare education. The applicant’s latest semester scores should be at or above a “B” average. Read More

Is an undergraduate degree required in order to start school? |
Ninety credits of college work and specific required courses is the minimum requirement for admissions. Students with less than 90 credits may be eligible for a year pre med course run by the College in St. Lucia, if they have less than the required hours for admission.
Most applicants have at least an undergraduate degree, and a high percentage have advanced or specialty degrees, including Ph.D.’s.

Are their specific residency or foreign language requirements?
|
“TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE” (TOEFEL) (http://www.wattpad.com/23750) scores are required from students whose first language is other than English or come from a country whose national language is not English.

Can I transfer into the College of Medicine from another medical school?
|
Students from some medical schools are eligible to apply for advanced standing but must meet all College admissions requirements. An original application, including all medical school work completed, scores on USMLE step I or II, or any other standardized tests must also be submitted with the application. Read More

Most transfer students must attend at least one semester in St. Lucia. Transfer of clinical training is possible.

Is the MCAT required or optional?
|
MCAT scores are not currently required for admissions, but are considered if they have been taken. If the MCAT is taken more than once, all scores must be submitted.
Within the next calendar year all United States applicants will be required to take the MCAT examination.

If interviews are required, where are they held?
|
Interviews will be offered to promising applicants, where student’s interests, character, and reasons for their decision to become a physician will be discussed. Interviews may be conducted on campus, at the student’s location, or via telephone.

What are the estimated annual expenses, including tuition and fees, books, supplies, study materials, housing, food, travel and other living costs?

What is the length and structure of the entire curriculum?
|
The pre clinical curriculum is five semesters of 15 weeks each (75 weeks). The clinical curriculum is 76 weeks in length. Read more

Where do students do their clinical training?
|
Currently clinical students do their core clinical training in teaching hospitals in the USA and elsewhere. Elective (fourth year) clinical training is a bit more flexible, in terms of student input.

|
The College, being less than 5 years old, has 16 graduates as of June of 2007.

Four of our graduates are in Residency training in outstanding hospitals in New Jersey, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia.

|
The college campus is located between the capital of Castries and the resort area of Rodney bay, 6 miles north of Castries, in the town of Gros Islet. Are there student associations or organizations on campus
|
The “College of Medicine and Health Sciences Student Association” has an active chapter on campus. This organization is an important player in the accreditation and operations of the College.

What is the make up of the student body? |
The student population is comprised primarily of students from Europe and Asia, followed by students from the United States. Many of our students, especially those in the independent study program, are older students with specialty degrees in healthcare.

How long do I spend in St. Lucia?
|
As a full-time student you will spend 15 months on campus in St. Lucia, stretched over a 20 month period. As an independent study student, you will spend 4 weeks each semester on campus in St. Lucia. The College plans to offer an extra “board review” semester soon in addition to the pre clinical terms.

How is housing arranged for students? Will I have assistance in obtaining housing?
|
The Campus dorms can accommodate 80 students on campus, in two students per room configuration. Additional on campus housing is being planned. Abundant off campus rooms and apartments are available, and are organized through the office of the Dean of Students

How is apartment living on the island?
|
In the college area, Apartments are readily available and equal in quality and price to the USA ($US 500.00 - 1,000.00 per month plus utilities).

Will I need a visa/passport to live in St. Lucia?
|
You will need a passport and a visa to live in St. Lucia. As a COMHS student you will receive continuous 6-month visas during your time in St. Lucia. Pre clinical students in the Independent Study program don’t need visas because each of their on campus sessions are shorter than the automatic 42 day visa given all travelers to St. Lucia. Read More

What about taking my family or a companion to St. Lucia?
|
No problem. All will need visas. You will probably live off campus under this circumstance.

Would my family member or companion find employment in St. Lucia?
|
Your companion would probably require a work permit ($US 3,000.00 annually) to do a job that could be held by a St. Lucian. “Critical Skills” employment is possible but would require an application for an annual Work Permit Exemption

Are pets allowed? Are there quarantine guidelines or rules for pet owners in St. Lucia?
|
St. Lucia is a rabies-free Country. Therefore bring pets to St. Lucia is discouraged, and prolonged impoundment is possible. In general, bringing pets is discouraged, but possible.

What is the population of St. Lucia?
|
St. Lucia is a relative large island in the Caribbean with approximately 160,000 inhabitants. Most of the population is in the capital city of Castries, and north, near the College.

What language is spoken in St. Lucia?

The official language of St. Lucia is English, however due to a strong French influence, a local dialect or “Creole”, based in French, is often heard being spoken by St. Lucians. Read more

Is it easy to travel to and from the college? Both on the island and from country to country?

St. Lucia is located in the Windward Islands of the southern Caribbean, approximately 1500 miles south east of Miami. Two airports supply the Island; Hewanorra International Airport at Vieux Forte in the south of the island, and receives international flights from everywhere. Read More

George F.L. Charles Airport (nicknamed Vigi) is an inter-island airport located in Castries, and is much closer to the College. Travelers from the USA usually reach St. Lucia via Vigi, through San Juan, Puerto Rico, thereby arriving much closer to the Campus. Read More

What kind of local transportation is available, bus, taxi?

The public transportation in St. Lucia is outstanding. Inexpensive buses run very frequently and can be taken to reach any part of the Island. Taxies are regulated, but can be fairly costly. Short and long-term car rentals are abundant. Read More
